I first met Noel Kade when she accompanied our real estate agent to show us a list of lots on Kiawah Island. At the time, Noel was the architect for Dolphin Architects and Builders. When I handed her a floor plan that I got from a magazine, she smiled and said that she could design a custom house for us that would fit perfectly on the lot we decided to purchase.
My husband and I had very specific ideas about what we wanted. We wanted a modern design and we wanted the exterior to feature shou sugi ban, a Japanese wood preservation technique where the wood is charred with fire and sealed with oil. Since this type of exterior is not a common feature in this part of the country, it required Noel to do quite a bit of research to find a resource for this type of material. As a prolific user of the Pinterest App, I was able to send her photographs of features that I wanted to emulate in the design, like a garden outside the primary bathroom and the shou sugi ban exterior. The house is spectacular!
I would attribute Noel’s astute sensibility to her being a woman. She listens to what the client wants and does not try to cut corners in the interest of expediency. My experience sometimes with male team members is that they sometimes have “a better idea.”
According to the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, about 73 percent of licensed architects are male and 27 percent female. In addition, contractors and subs are almost exclusively male. Women in the construction industry must be resolute because they work in a male dominated environment. Those are the kinds of traits that we looked for in interviewing architects and Noel more than proved her mettle. I highly recommend Noel for any design project she endeavors to undertake. We are ecstatic with our choice.
